Project Overview

Faith-affiliated undergraduate institutions claim not only to achieve the educational results generally associated with a liberal arts education but also to foster the religious, spiritual, moral and ethical development of the students they enroll. Three Roman Catholic liberal arts colleges are exploring the degree to which the students on their respective campuses do in fact mature as moral and spiritual persons. This exploration will enable each school to identify areas of strength and weakness and to develop strategies for building on the former and remediating the latter.

This ambitious assessment project began during the 2007-2008 academic year when students, faculty and administrators from the three institutions met frequently to articulate the student development goals that the three campuses share with regard to this area of their broad educational missions. Since that time, the three colleges have collaborated to plan an assessment project that can be carried out on each campus in parallel. The resultant assessment design incorporates national survey data, student essays, and focus group techniques. Upon completion of the assessment project in 2012, the colleges will each have valuable assessment data that can serve as a basis for recommendations for enhancing students' moral and spiritual development at their institution.
